Questionnaire Results

Question 1: Age

  • This first stat demonstrates the focus group of my survey as the target audience of my music video is 16-25, but a few additional opinions from people from older age groups should add some perspective on how to appeal to a wider audience.

Question 2: Favourite music
genre:

  • Alternative is second in my survey behind rap, demonstrating its popularity in this demographic.

Question 3: How many music video's do you watch per week?

  • My sample demonstrates a strong engagement and interest in music videos as amongst different ages, genders, and interests; pretty much everyone within my survey watches at least one music video per week. Over 50% watch more than 5 per week.

Question 4: Do you enjoy music videos? If so why?

  • The general consensus here is that unless the narrative is something different to the music video norm, then they generally become a bit tiresome to watch for a younger audience. ]
  • In addition to this, the importance of realistic performance in videos is hammered home, with 2-3 of the comments you can see saying they like the visual performance of the band, and perhaps a live performance in a video would be even better.
  • This stresses the importance of finding a balance between interesting narrative and believable performance scenes.

This particular research reinforces my opinion of how an interesting narrative, as well as a well made performance part of the video, would be the perfect formula to success in this genre; this must be achieved in order to meet my target audiences expectations.

Question 5: What is your favourite music video?

  • Eminem's 'Without me' a popular choice, and a video I have never seen before. Nonetheless in order to increase my understanding of how to appeal to a wider audience, I will watch in order to aim to understand its key strengths. Namely its humour (a common theme in early Eminem videos) which is something i need to replicate in a similar form.
Question 7: Are music videos you have watched common to music you like? Or is there another reason to watch them?

The consensus here is that popular culture (the charts, tv, social media) usually decided people watch and don't watch. Demonstrating the need to get momentum in the media to get your video seen. It also demonstrates the importance of having a popular song ahead of a popular video, because your song is statistically much more be solely heard first, before it is seen. That is why i picked a long time popular song.

Question 8: How would you describe the Alternative music genre and is it something that like/listen to regularly?

  • 'Made up from wide range of genre's', 'Full of different sounds unlike other genres' Demonstrating the common held understanding for the freedom and flexibility of the genre.
  • 'Thought provoking' The opinion I share that the genre challenges societal views and gives and commentary which is profound in modern music.

  • 'Often produces great popular music' Despite the freedom, politics, art etc; the genre still produces many many generally popular, successful songs, and this is something I will certainly strive to achieve.

Question 9: Which of the below would offend you if you witnessed it in a music video?
  • 30% saw sexual content to have the potential to offend, and considering that the context of this depends on the level of the sexual content, my sample demonstrates a relaxed to music video content and the boundaries in place

Question 10: Any additional comments on music videos?
